Inquiry-based teaching practices: mapping the situation in Spanish schools and validating evidence-based training

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) highlights the need to promote effective learning for 21st-century teachers so that they can be researchers and innovators in their educational practice. For many years, it has been argued that teachers need to be able to use and conduct research to assess and improve their own practices (Zeichner, 2003), as this contributes to their professional development and school improvement (Borg, 2010; Mitchell et al., 2009). However, academic research in the international context reveals a general lack of research culture on the schools field. Studies have shown that teachers rarely use scientific research findings to improve their own practice (Baan et al., 2018; Kress, 2011; Leeman and Wardekker, 2014). In the Spanish context, although there are few studies on the subject, the results point in the same direction (Badia et al., 2021).

The objective of this project is twofold: first, to understand how research-based educational practices are perceived in the Spanish context, and which conditions or factors act as facilitators or obstacles; second, to determine how we can contribute to the development of research competencies in future teachers during their initial training, specifically in the Practicum settings.

The members of the SINTE-URL research team are carrying out a research project funded by the Ministry of Science and Education (Reference PID2021-128483OB-I00).

Below you will find information about the objectives of this study and the details of the participation we are asking of you. Please take some time to read the information carefully before confirming your participation. If anything is unclear or if you would like more information, do not hesitate to contact us at indaga@blanquerna.url.edu

What is the aim of the project?

The purpose of the project is to analyze how in-service teachers, Primary Education degree students, and professors from Education Faculties perceive and implement inquiry-based educational practices in Spain. This information will allow us to offer a series of training resources to support the development of research-informed educational practices.

What is the purpose of the project?

The purpose of this project is to offer resources that promote the professional development of in-service teachers to develop research-informed practices. Additionally, it aims to improve the initial training of future teachers by increasing their competencies in developing inquiry-based educational practices, especially in the context of the Practicum. The results will be collected in various formats, including written reports, scientific articles, national and international conferences, audiovisual training resources, etc.

How is the project funded?

This project is supported by the Ministry of Science and Education (Reference PID2021-128483OB-I00).

What does participation involve?

If you decide to participate in the project, we will ask you to answer a set of questions through our online survey platform completely anonymously. You can complete the questions at your own pace, save your responses, and return to the survey at another time.

We estimate that you will need about 10 minutes to complete the survey. The questions are related to the project's objective. We also collect sociodemographic data to compare the impact on different groups and conditions.

At the end of the survey, there is an option to register interest in participating in future phases of the research; if you accept, we will ask for your email address so that we can contact you later. If you choose this option, we will also inform you of the results and updates of the project personally.

Should I participate?

Participation is completely voluntary. After reviewing this information page, you can contact us (indaga@blanquerna.url.edu) if you have any questions or concerns you want to address before making a decision.

If you decide to participate in this study, we will ask you to indicate that you have read and understood the provided information and give your consent for your anonymous responses to be used exclusively for purposes related to the research objectives.

What are the possible risks of participating?

Your participation does not involve any specific risk.

What are the possible benefits of participating?

You will be collaborating in work designed to understand the perception of education professionals regarding research-based educational practices, and the conditions and/or factors that act as facilitators or obstacles to improving the support teachers receive to develop their research competencies. Moreover, answering the questions posed may help you reflect on your experience to date and your future plans as an inquirer teacher.

What happens if I change my mind about participating?

You can leave the survey by closing the browser page. However, please note that once the survey is completed, it will no longer be possible to withdraw your data from the study due to its absolute anonymity.

Data management and confidentiality

Our goal is to maintain anonymous data collection to ensure that no one, including the researchers, can discover your identity or connect it to your responses, either directly or indirectly.

All participants will be assigned a code that will prevent the identification of the participant with the responses, guaranteeing total confidentiality. The data obtained from your participation will not be used for any purpose other than what is stated in this research and will be treated confidentially under the direct responsibility of the principal investigator, Dr. Eva Liesa. Your data will be stored securely on the online survey platform hosted on a private and protected hosting service that only the research team has access to, and later, once the project is finished, in the private space of the FPCEE Blanquerna institution (Universitat Ramon Llull) protected with a password that only the project's PI will have access to.
